Hi there!

I don't want to push you (I know you are busy) rather I want to open discussion about Vmware.

Would it be big deal to integrate GNS3 with Vmware virtual machines. I mean in general way. I googled quickly and found that there is some API to start Virtual machines and so on (http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vix-api/). I didn't investigate this more but it would be usefull.

Here are functions I have thought:
1. Configure virtual machine (or just download ready image)
2. Add it like any other device on GNS3 workspace (GNS3 could configure interface etc automatically)
3. Start it and go!

I have thought this because there are lots of network device that can be run on Vmware. Vyatta is really cool opensouce router, VPN-device and firewall. Also Stonegate firewall can be run on Vmware. I'm sure these aren't the only ones.

I would like to hear your comments about this.

Hi,

I'll do it if this is simple and I don't need to change a lot of code :)

I'll read the API first.

Thanks for this idea.

I second this request- I have olive for both QEMU and VMWARE, the VMWARE version seems a bit more stable and less painful to run.

Also true with the myriad of devices and s/w previously mentioned.

Thanks,

-Tony

i have been playing around that myself. i think intergrating vmware with gns3 is the best way to simulate network environments. it just that as far as i have gone is to map nfp interfaces defined in the gns cloud to the vmware interfaces. and its awsome.

Hi,
at least we could run VMware with Cisco Unified Communication Manager image directly from GNS3 ;-)
If more emulators are supported by GNS3 then it will be much attractive for more users.

Cheers,

Hi,

The major problem for integrating vmware (or virtual box) in GNS3, is that network connections are not UDP tunnel like Dynamips. Therefore, administrator rights are needed.

To start, stop or suspend a VM, there is a python library that talks with vmware.
